The idea of under shepherding a church was first conceived by the late Bishop Alfred B. Washington in 1978.

On Tuesday evening July 17, 1979 that idea became a reality when many friends came out to Kenmore Junior High School in Landover, Maryland for the first service of “Christ Temple Of Joy.”

While looking for a permanent church home, some friends brought to our attention a building available for use at 6300 Baltic street Seat Pleasant, Maryland and gave us the information as to whom to contact.  Before contacting the appropriate person, Pastor Washington and some of the men of the church stood upon the scripture found in Joshua 1:3 which reads “Every place that the sole of your foot shall tread upon that have I given unto you, as I said unto Moses.”

In May 1980 we began to see this scripture coming to past.  Within six weeks Kenmore Junior High school would be closing its’ doors for the summer.  The Lord opened the door for us to rent the building on Baltic street on a monthly basis.  We rented this building from May 1980 through March 30, 1983.  On March 31, 1983, Joshua 1:3 was manifested when Christ Temple Of joy, Incorporated purchased the building.
